The Word Monster Part 2
Visual Word Humour? Yes, please.
Honestly, the drool joke in this part is why I love this script so much. There's so much you can do when your character's made out of words.
EXT. AGATHA’S HOUSE - DAY Joel stands outside Agatha’s door with some paper and a pencil case. He takes a breath and knocks on the door. The monster opens it and stares at Joel. Joel squirms under his gaze. After a moment, Agatha comes to the door. AGATHA Upstairs. INT. AGATHA’S BEDROOM - DAY Joel follows Agatha into her room. The monster hovers a little too close to Joel. He looks over his shoulder at him.
JOEL
How did you make him?
Agatha rolls her eyes and grabs her notebook and pencil off
of her desk.
AGATHA
Watch closely because I’m only
doing this once.
She slowly writes a few sentences, half hiding them with her
other arm. The monster pushes past Joel and places a hand
over the notebook just as she finishes writing. The words
slowly peel off the page, float upwards and settle into the
monster’s form.
JOEL
Awesome.
Agatha slams the notebook shut and grabs some loose papers.
AGATHA
Yes, I know. Now, what is this
story going to be about?
Joel gestures to the monster.
JOEL
What if he does that to our story?
Agatha avoids looking at Joel.
AGATHA
...He only likes certain kinds of
words. Now, this story-
JOEL
What if it was about a dragon?
Agatha snorts a laugh.
AGATHA
Everything is about dragons, that’s
so cliche. Here’s what we’ll write
about... INT. AGATHA’S BEDROOM - LATER
Agatha sits writing at the desk, Joel looking over her
shoulder, alternating sides. She ignores him.
JOEL
What if-
AGATHA
No.
JOEL
But what about-
AGATHA
No.
Joel leans in close to the paper. His face lights up.
JOEL
What if it turns out the best
friend was the bad guy all along?
Agatha sets down her pencil, thinks for a moment, then
slowly turns to him.
AGATHA
...That might actually be a half
good idea. But only maybe.
Joel smiles at her. After a moment of looking at him, she
smiles slightly. The two set off writing together.
INT. JOEL’S BEDROOM - EVENING
Joel sits at his desk looking over a book. He looks over at
Agatha’s window and sees her sitting at her desk. He waves.
Agatha starts to give a small wave, but the monster steps in
front of Agatha and shuts the curtains.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE OF AGATHA’S BEDROOM - DAY
Joel carries a stack of books and walks to Agatha’s door. He
pushes it open while looking at his stack of books.
JOEL
Hey, I brought-
Agatha is in the middle of writing while the monster absorbs
her words. When Joel sees her, she snaps to attention, slaps
her notebook shut, and shoves it to one side. The monster
turns and stares at Joel.
AGATHA
You’re late. We should start.
Joel awkwardly shrugs and walks into the room.
JOEL
Okay.
INT. AGATHA’S BEDROOM - DAY
Agatha sits at her desk while Joel stands right by her. She
writes while Joel points at several places on the paper,
talking away. The monster watches in the background.
FADE TO
INT. AGATHA’S BEDROOM - DAY
As Joel talks to Agatha, she responds to him, occasionally
writing a few sentences. The monster moves in closer.
FADE TO
INT. AGATHA’S BEDROOM - DAY
Agatha talks enthusiastically to Joel while he listens. Her
pencil lays on the table. Beside her, the monster picks up
her notebook and offers it to her, but she does not notice.
INT. AGATHA’S BEDROOM - DAY
Agatha writes, reaching the end of her paper.
AGATHA
And then-
She shoves the paper out of the way only to find bare desk
underneath it.
She gets up from her desk and runs to the door.
AGATHA
I’ll go get some more paper!
She leaves and closes the door, Joel and the monster
watching her do so.
The monster looks over to Joel and places a hand on their
story on the desk. Joel looks over to the monster. The
monster suddenly closes his hand, crumpling up the papers
beneath in his fist. He and Joel lock eyes and neither move
for a moment.
The monster takes a step towards Joel. He advances on him,
step after step. Joel starts to back away.
Just as the monster gets close and begins to tower over him,
Agatha bursts back through the door. Both the monster and
Joel turn to look at her. She laughs nervously.
AGATHA
What is it?
JOEL
Nothing.
Agatha walks over to the desk.
AGATHA
Oh, well should we get back to
writing then?
Joel gathers his books from the desk. The monster hasn’t
moved and continues to watch him.
JOEL
Actually, it’s getting kind of late
and my mom will be home soon, so I
think I’m gonna go.
Agatha looks away when he mentions his mother. Joel heads
towards the door. He turns around.
JOEL (CONT’D)
Hey, maybe we could work at my
house tomorrow! I have tons of
books there and some really cool
pens we could use.
Agatha looks back to him and smiles.
AGATHA
That sounds great.
Joel leaves.
JOEL
Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow!
As the door closes behind him, the monster, still as a
statue, watches him.
INT. JOEL’S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Joel lays asleep in his bed. The letter "D" drops onto his
face, sliding off a bit. After a moment, the letters "ROOL"
drop quickly next to it. He stirs in his sleep and wakes up.
Joel recoils when he sees that the monster is sitting on his
bed, looming over top of him, mouth open.
The monster suddenly pins Joel down, shoving his face close
to Joel’s. Neither of them moves for a moment; the monster
only stares down Joel.
In this moment, Joel, terrified, looks closely at the
monster. He suddenly notices certain words and phrases
repeated throughout his form: "I hate them", "Why", "They
don’t love me", "They’re never they here", etc. The monster
is made entirely of hateful and spiteful words.
The monster suddenly roars into Joel’s face, leaps off of
him, and dives out his open window. Joel sits panting.
